Extreme K9s 101!

Today's awesome featured K9 is Sophi, the English Springer Spaniel!

"When 2-week-old Eurasian eagle owl Bramble arrived at a bird of prey sanctuary in England, her first friend wasn't a feathered flyer but an English springer spaniel named Sophi. For the past 2 years, the pair has been inseparable, even though their friendship would never bloom in the wild. (Owls prey on small mammals about Sophi's size.) But these two look out for each other. Before the bird takes off for her flights each morning, the dog gives her a good grooming, including licking her beak."

Lowlands!

Polish Lowland Sheepdogs also known as, Polish Owczarek Nizinny (Pronounced: Ov-CHA-rek Nee-ZHEE-neeare) are so cool so why don't you have a look at some facts about them!

#1. "The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a medium sized, shaggy working dog."
#2. "The head is moderately broad and slightly domed."
#3. "The drop ears are heart-shaped and set moderately high."
#4. "The eyes are hazel or brown, but can also be blue although it is not accepted in the AKC show ring."
#5. "The nose is dark."
#6. "The teeth meet in a level bite."
#7. "The back is level and fairly broad."
#8. "The loins and thighs are well-muscled and broad."
#9. "The tail is a natural bobtail or is docked short."
#10. "The Polish Lowland Sheepdog has a long wire-haired coat, with a soft under-layer. All coat colors are permitted, but white with gray or black, or plain gray are more common. The Polish Lowland Sheepdog has a lot of hair on its forehead, cheeks, chin and legs."
#11. "This animated, clever, happy, and alert dog has a good memory."
#12. "It is obedient, intelligent and affectionate."
#13. "Somewhat reserved and watchful with strangers, it will announce visitors loudly. The Polish Lowland Sheepdog should be accustomed to people at an early age."
#14. "Dependable and fairly easy to train, once convinced the handler is a strong minded being that can take care of its "pack", the Polish Lowland Sheepdog will make the owner happy."
#15. "It learns quickly and is very willing to please; however, it can be willful if it senses it is stronger minded than its owner. This breed is responsive to firm, fair obedience training; but it is also clever, strong-willed, and will think he knows best if you are not properly communicating with him."
#16. "The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a serious, responsible dog who could bite if provoked. This sheepdog may nip at people's heels, displaying herding behavior."
#17. "The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is excellent with children when raised with them from puppyhood and/or properly socialized."
#18. "They can be friendly with other dogs; but they will hold their own if another dog tries to knock them out from being the leader. The Polish Lowland Sheepdog will usually do okay with other non-canine pets."
#19. "As a working dog for many centuries, the Polish Lowland Sheepdog is happiest when it is given a job to do. This breed is lively and clever enough to work sheep alone."
#20. "This cute, shaggy dog does not grow into a calm, little lap-dog."
#21. "The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a curious, muscular, agile dog, that is liable to find trouble if left alone without leadership, and the proper mental and physical exercise."
#22. "This breed needs an owner who is firm and consistent."
#23. "Socialization and training are important."
#24. "This breed is adaptable and makes a good traveling companion."
#25. "Height: 16-20 inches (41-51 cm.)"
#26. "Weight: 30-35 pounds (14-16 kg.)"
#27. "This is a fairly hardy breed."
#28. "The Polish Lowland Sheepdog can live in an apartment if it gets plenty of exercise and has a job to do. It prefers cool climates."
#29. "The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a working dog at heart. It once watched over herds and flocks on the Polish plains. This dog is definitely not suited to town or city life, unless you plan on spending a lot of time exercising and stimulating. This intelligent dog needs stimulation and a job to do. Playing an active game of catch or Frisbee, or joining agility classes are just some of the things you can do to keep the Polish Lowland Sheepdog simulated and happy. If they are not actively working, they need to be taken on a couple of daily, long, brisk walks or jogs. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as instinct tells a dog the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human."
#30. "Life Expectancy: About 12-15 years."

Pointers!

English Pointers are so cool so why don't you have a look at some facts about them!

#1. "The Pointer, also known as the English Pointer, is a powerful, hunting dog."
#2. "The head is about as wide as the muzzle is long."
#3. "The neck is long."
#4. "The nose is black or brown in color in the darker coated dogs and may be lighter or flesh in the lighter dogs."
#5. "The teeth should meet in a level or scissors bite."
#6. "The round eyes are dark in contrast with the markings on the coat."
#7. "The hanging ears are somewhat pointed at the end."
#8. "The front legs are straight."
#9. "The tail is larger at the root, tapering to a point."
#10. "The coat is short, smooth and dense. Coat colors include primarily white with liver, lemon, black, and or orange markings either solid, patched or speckled or can be solid in color. May be tri-colored."
#11. "English Pointers are extremely high energy, and very enthusiastic hunters."
#12. "With enough exercise they will be calm in the home."
#13. "Intelligent, devoted, loyal and clean."
#14. "They are patient, friendly, affectionate and love children and are a true friend to the family."
#15. "They adapt well to new situations."
#16. "Can be reserved with strangers."
#17. "Socialize well at an early age and as the owner of the dog be sure to stay mentally strong so the dog can feed from your energy to avoid timidity. Nervous humans tend to have nervous dogs because the dog can feel your emotions. If you do not provide enough mental and or physical exercise they will become high-strung and distractible and can become neurotic and destructive. If they sense their owners are not as strong minded as themselves they will become a bit willful as they will believe they need to be the leader of the relationship."
#18. "It will bark at suspicious noises, but it is not a watchdog."
#19. "Hunting instincts develop early."
#20. "Puppies will start to display pointing behavior as young as 8 weeks old."
#21. "These dogs are generally good with other pets and are not usually dog-aggressive."
#22. "Height: Dogs ~ 22-24 inches (55-62cm.)
Bitches ~ 21-24 inches (54-60cm.)"
#23. "Weight: 44-66 pounds (20-30kg)."
#24. "Prone to hip dysplasia, thyroid and dwarfism. Also skin conditions."
#25. "These dogs are not recommended for apartment life. They are moderately active indoors and do best with acreage."
#26. "This dog is extremely energetic and tireless. It is very important that it gets daily vigorous exercise to prevent extreme indoor restlessness. This breed is more than a match for even the most active family and they should not be taken on as a family pet unless they can guarantee plenty of vigorous exercise. They need to be taken on a daily, brisk, long walk, jog or run alongside you when you bicycle. They are excellent jogging companions and love to swim and retrieve. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as instinct tells a dog the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. Teach them to enter and exit door and gateways after the humans."
#27. "Life Expectancy: About 13-14 years."
#28. "The smooth coat of the Pointer is very easy to groom. Just brush regularly with a firm bristle brush and bathe only when necessary. A rub with a piece of toweling or chamois will leave the coat gleaming. Check the feet also, especially after the dog has been exercising or working. Dry the dog thoroughly after hunting to prevent chilling. Ears should be checked regularly. This breed is an average shedder."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's Extreme K9 is Oscar the Terrier Mix and the story of him traveling the world!

"Oscar is a dog without equal. This year, he traveled across an incredible five continents, 29 countries and stopped off everywhere from the Eiffel Tower to the Taj Mahal.
He was rescued from a South African kennel by Joanne Lefson, who is half-British, five years ago. In May the pair began an epic journey hoping to inspire millions to help save his fellow canines living as strays on the streets. After dodging crocodile-infested rivers, walking on the Great Wall of China and escaping Italian police, Oscar finally finished his tour last week.
The £250,000 six-month trip - which Joanne funded by selling her home - also took in an amazing 15,000 shelter dogs and more than 50 charity-run rescue centres. On their worldwide travels, Joanne and Oscar also handed out 15,000 dog leads to needy hounds donated by the parcel company UPS."

Plotts!

Plott Hounds are so cool so why don't you have a look at some facts about them!

#1. "The Plott Hound is a medium-sized, powerful, muscular dog."
#2. "The skull is moderately flat with well fitted skin."
#3. "The lips and nose are black."
#4. "The prominent eyes are brown or hazel with black eye rims."
#5. "The hanging ears are broad-set, and medium in length."
#6. "The long tail is set below the top line."
#7. "The strong feet have webbed toes."
#8. "The coat is short, smooth, fine and glossy. While most Plott coats are single from time to time a double coat can occur. Coat colors include any shade of brindle, solid black, brindle with black saddle, black with brindle trim, and a rare buckskin. There may be some white around the chest and feet."
#9. "This breed makes a fine companion."
#10. "Loyal and intelligent, the Plott Hound is quick to learn and quick to love and is good with children."
#11. "Their personable natures are surely not evident on the trail. This large game hunter and scent hound has great courage. Determined, courageous and proud, it will play chicken with a 500-pound bear or a wildly, angry boar."
#12. "The Plott has a curiously sharp and high-pitched voice, unlike the deep-throated howl common to other coonhounds."
#13. "Socialize this breed at an early age and be sure to teach it simple obedience like walking on a leash."
#14. "Plotts tend to drool and slobber."
#15. "They need a firm, but calm, confident, consistent handler."
#16. "Height: 20-24 inches (51-61 cm.)"
#17. "Weight: 45-55 pounds (20-25 kg.)"
#18. "he Plott Hound is considered the hardiest of the coonhounds. It eats large quantities of food quickly, which makes it susceptible to gastric torsion and life-threatening twisting of the stomach. Do not exercise this dog after a big meal."
#19. "The Plott Hound is not recommended for apartment life. They can live and sleep outdoors provided they have proper shelter. This breed has no road sense at all and should be kept in a safe area because they have a tendency to wander."
#20. "The Plott Hound needs a lot of physical exercise, which includes a daily, long, brisk walk or jog. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as in a dog's mind the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. This well-muscled and rather lean- boned dog has the endurance and stamina to work all day and well into the night. The Plott Hound should have chances to run free but is born a natural hunter and has a tendency to run off and hunt if they are not kept in a well fenced area while exercising off the lead."
#21. "Life Expectancy ~ About 12-14 years."
#22. "The short coat of the Plott Hound is easy to groom. Comb and brush occasionally to remove the dead hair. Check the ears often to make sure they are clean and infection free. After hunting they should be checked for torn nails, split pads on their feet, torn ears, and fleas and ticks."
#23. "The Plott Hound is the only American hound without British ancestry. In 1750 Jonathan Plott and his brother left Germany bound for America. They took with them five Hanoverian Hounds. Jonathan Plott's brother died during the trip but Jonathan settled in North Carolina. It was there that he raised a family and bred his dogs. A mix of bloodhounds and curs reportedly comprised the original stock. For the next 200 years the dogs were bred by generations of Plott family members and were referred to as the Plott's hounds. The dogs worked at hunting bear and raccoon in the Appalachian, Blue Ridge, and Great Smoky Mountains of the Eastern United States. The Plott family rarely put the dogs on the market so they remained rare outside the southern United States. The dogs were recognized for the first time in 1946 by the United Kennel Club. Plotts are hardy and have superior hunting instincts. They are very effective in the search for coyotes, wolves, and wildcats. The breed was carefully developed to be stronger and more persistent. They were able to make good family companions but were seldom kept as one, as most owners acquired the dogs for the hunt. In 2006 the breed was officially recognized by the AKC as the "Plott" and is now shown as a show dog, but there are many who still hunt and breed them as hunting dogs."

Ask Annabel ~ Pharaohs!

Pharaoh Hounds are so cool so why don't you have a look at some facts about them!

#1. "Pronunciation: FAIR-o Hound."
#2. "The Pharaoh Hound is a tall, slender, athletic sighthound."
#3. "The length of the body is slightly longer than it is tall."
#4. "The neck is long and lean, slightly arched."
#5. "The head is wedge-shaped and chiseled."
#6. "The nose is almost the same color as the coat."
#7. "The teeth meet in a scissors bite."
#8. "The small, oval eyes are moderately deep set, and amber in color."
#9. "The large ears stand are medium-high-set, erect and are broad at the base."
#10. "The long, whip-like tail is medium set, thicker at the base tapering."
#11. "The front legs are straight."
#12. "The short, glossy, fine to close coat comes in red or tan, often with white markings. Show ring judges prefer white on the tip of the tail."
#13. "The Pharaoh Hound is reasonably independent and a most pleasant companion dog."
#14. "It is peaceful in the house and loves to play outdoors."
#15. "They will be calm provided they receive enough exercise."
#16. "Loyal, brave and loving, this quiet dog is naturally well-behaved and intelligent."
#17. "They love children, but are reserved with strangers."
#18. "A truly unique trait of this breed is, when they are excited they "blush", turning a glowing deep rose on their nose and ears."
#19. "The Pharaoh Hound should not be too difficult to train. The handler needs to be understanding of the dog's character and to be consistent in approach. It can do well in competitive obedience."
#20. "Socialize the Pharaoh well at an early age and as the owner of the dog be sure to stay mentally strong so the dog can feed from your energy to avoid timidity. Nervous humans tend to have nervous dogs because the dog can feel your emotions."
#21. "Generally good with other dogs, but can be rather dominant toward other male dogs if the owners are not there to communicate to the dog that dominance is an unwanted behavior. This breed likes to chase and they are very fast. A speedy hunter, it should not be trusted with pet mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats and other small non-canine pets."
#22. "Do not take them off the leash unless you are in a safely contained area, because if they spot a rabbit they will be gone."
#23. "The Pharaoh Hound needs an owner who is calm, displaying a confident, consistent, natural authority over him. The rules must be made clear in such a way that the dog can understand."
#24. "Height: Dogs 23-25 inches (59-63 cm.)
Bitches 21-24 inches (53-61 cm.)"
#25. "Weight: 45-55 pounds (20-25 kg.)"
#26. "This is a very healthy and hardy breed, but beware, the Pharaoh can be highly sensitive to insecticides and medicines."
#27. "The Pharaoh Hound will be okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. It is relatively inactive indoors and will do best with at least a large yard. It needs soft bedding and warmth and generally should not be expected to sleep outside except in warm climates... but it would still prefer to sleep with its family. This breed likes to chase things and should not be let off the leash unless it is in a safe area. They can go far away from you if they spy or scent wild game because they never loose their instinct to hunt alone. To prevent this you will need a secure, high fence around your yard. They can jump very high to get out of a space."
#28. "The Pharaoh Hound relishes the opportunity to stretch its legs in a safe area - with frequent long runs. Try to set aside an hour each day to bicycle while the dog runs alongside you on a leash, although it can manage with a long daily walk on the leash and occasional sprints. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as in a dog's mind the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human."
#29. "Life Expectancy: About 11-14 years."
#30. "The Pharaoh Hound is one of the oldest domesticated dog breeds in the world. The breed is estimated to have originated around 4000 to 3000 BC. The breed's exact origin is unknown, but one belief is it began in Ancient Egypt. Numerous Egyptian artifacts and writings show a dog that is undeniably a direct ancestor of the Pharaoh Hound. The dogs were used to chase and hunt small game and were also a loyal companion of the royal pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. It is believed that the Phoenicians brought the dogs from Egypt to the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Gozo. The dogs are now the national dog of Malta, declared in 1974. For 2000 years the people of Malta were exclusively responsible for developing and preserving the breed into the Pharaoh Hound we know today. In Malta the hound is known as the Kelb Tal-Fenek, which literally translated means "Dog of the rabbit", which was the dogs main task. Just like his Mediterranean cousins, the Ibizan Hound, the Cirneco Dell Etna, the Portuguese Podengo, and the Podenco Canario, the Pharaoh Hound is both a sight hound as well as a scent hound, using its sense of smell to a marked degree when searching for its prey. When the prey bolts, its sight hound instincts come into play and the hound is in full flight in strong pursuit. The breed is also a good guard dog. It has been used to accompany goats and sheep on their way to the pasture and as a gundog to flush and retrieve quail and woodcock. Maltese Lira coins were minted in 1977 depicting the Pharaoh Hound on the back side. During the 1960's Pharaoh Hounds were imported to England and to the United States. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1983."
