Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Kabang!

"It looks like 2013 is shaping up to be a pretty good year for Kabang, a dog from the Philippines who almost made the ultimate sacrifice when she jumped in front of a motorcycle to save her owner's daughter and niece. The dog lived, but the top half of her snout was destroyed, leaving her with a disfiguring and potentially life-threatening injury. When the vet suggested it might be easier to have the dog put down, owner Rudy Bunggal refused, citing the dog's incredible heroics.

Kabang lost her snout while saving two girls from a motorcycle accident. Project Kabang rallied around the dog, raising enough money to transport her to the United States to receive the best care possible at the University of California, Davis. But her struggle was far from over.

It turns out Kabang was also suffering from cancer. However, a round of chemotherapy infusions seems to have beaten the disease, putting Kabang one step closer to her reconstructive surgery. The hero dog is also receiving treatment for heartworm. She's already received her first dose of medication and is expected to receive the second in January.

Once cleared, Kabang will undergo surgery to close her gaping wound. Surgeons are planning two to three procedures. The first will concentrate on dental work, extracting teeth and protecting exposed roots. Then doctors will close the wound, restoring nasal functions. Currently the exposed boney structures of Kabang's face are at high risk for infection. Despite the daunting road ahead, vets at Davis say that Kabang "has come through everything very well. Her appetite is still good. She's still bright and happy."

If all goes well, Kabang might be returning to her family in May or June, where we are sure she will receive a hero's welcome."

Extreme K9s 101!

Sorry for the delayed post!

Today's extreme K9 is Belle!

"Kevin Weaver has diabetes. He also has a specially-trained beagle named Belle who can sense when his blood sugar levels are off. She licks his nose, and then paws at him to signal that he should take a reading. In the summer of 2006, Belle put another skill to work. Weaver suffered a seizure and collapsed. Belle grabbed the man's cell phone and bit down on the number 9, just like she had been trained. The number was programmed to dial 911, and emergency workers soon arrived. Belle was later given the VITA Wireless Samaritan Award for those who use cell phones to save lives. Belle was the first dog to ever win the award."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Cairo!

"Cairo the military dog was born and bred for the job. He is a Belgian Malinois, a shepherd breed that few were familiar with, until Cairo’s story became news. After Cairo trained to be a Military Working Dog at a young age, he advanced to Navy SEAL training. Cairo was the only dog to accompany Navy SEAL Team 6 as they raided Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan. Cairo was strapped to his handler as they were lowered from a helicopter, and wore special body armor while bursting into the compound. The dog is the only member of SEAL Team 6 to be publicly named."

Bone Appetit!

Today's cool recipe is Everyday Biscuits!

"Ingredients:
2 teaspoons dry yeast
1/2 cup lukewarm water
2 tablespoons dry parsley
2 tablespoons minced garlic 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
3 tablespoons honey
1 egg
5-6 cups whole wheat flour

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 ° F (180 ° C).

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir in the parsley, garlic, broth, honey, and egg. Gradually blend in flour, adding enough to form a stiff dough.

Transfer to a floured surface and knead until smooth (about 3-5 minutes). Shape the dough into a ball, and roll to 1/4-inch (6 mm) thick. Using small bone-shaped cookie cutters, make biscuits! Transfer to ungreased baking sheets, spacing them about 1/4 inch (6 mm) apart. Gather up the scraps, roll out again, and cut additional biscuits.

Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and turn over. Bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until lightly browned on both sides. Let cool overnight. (After we finish baking all batches of biscuits, we turn off the oven, then spread all the biscuits out on one baking sheet and set them in the oven to cool overnight. The extra time in the oven as it cools off helps make the treats crispier and crunchier.)

Makes several dozen small bones that keep and freeze well. We like these biscuits because they're quick and easy and we always have the ingredients on hand to make them. Our boys like them because they're good!"
