Today's extreme K9 is Bobbie!

"In 1923, while on a family road trip in Indiana, Bobbie—a two-year old Scotch Collie/English Shepherd mix—was separated from his owners and lost. After an exhaustive search the broken-hearted family returned to their home in Oregon never expecting to see their beloved dog again. Six months later, Bobbie appeared on their doorstep mangy and scrawny with feet worn to the bone; he showed all the signs of having walked the entire way back alone.

During his ordeal he crossed 2,551 miles (4,105 km) miles of plain, desert and mountains in the winter to return home. After his return to Silverton, he experienced a meteoric rise to fame. He was the subject of newspaper articles including Ripley's Believe It or Not!, books and film. Bobbie played himself in the 1924 silent film The Call of the West. He received hundreds of letters from people around the world and was honored with a jewel-studded harness and collar, ribbons and keys to cities.

Upon his death in 1927, he was buried with honors at the Oregon Humane Society's pet cemetery in Portland. A week later, Rin Tin Tin laid a wreath at his grave. His grave is sheltered by a "fancy white and red dog house" received during a promotional appearance at the Portland Home Show. The gravestone has been moved outside the house for better viewing.

Bobbie's demonstration of loyalty is celebrated during Silverton's annual children's pet parade that serves as a reminder of the special place animals and pets have in people's lives. The event was started several years after Bobbie's death and the first parade was led by his son, Pal. A 70-foot-long (21 m) outdoor painting featuring Bobbie's story is part of a series of murals that decorates the walls of businesses in Silverton.

Today's awesome recipe is Poodle Pasta!

"Ingredients:

3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

8 ounces beef liver

3 whole egg

1 tablespoon olive oil

8 tablespoons butter -- optional

Directions:

Puree beef liver in blender until smooth. Add eggs and blend for about a minute.Put flour in a large mixing bowl and make a well in the center of the flour.

Pour liver and egg mixture into well along with olive oil. Mix well until thoroughly combined.

Turn dough out on floured board and knead well for at least 5 minutes or until smooth and shiny.

Wrap dough in plastic wrap and let dough rest in refrigerator for at least 1 hour, no longer than 2 days.

When ready to make pasta, divide dough into 8 equal portions, approximately 4 oz. each.

Form into desired pasta shapes with hands or use pasta machine.

Cook in rapidly boiling water until al dente. For thin noodles, approximately 10 minutes, for thicker noodles a few minutes longer.

Drain noodles and toss with 1 tablespoon butter per serving, if desired.

Instead of butter, try tossing noodles with 1 tablespoon olive oil, canola oil or other oil high in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids."

Today's extreme K9 is Betsy!

"Betsy (born 2002) lives in Vienna, Austria with her owner, who goes by the pseudonym "Schäfer" (English: Shepherd). Betsy is also a pseudonym given to her by animal cognition researchers. At ten weeks of age, Betsy was able to sit on command and knew numerous objects, such as a ball and set of keys, by their name and would fetch them on verbal command. Betsy was discovered after her owner answered a request by National Geographic Magazine to submit intelligent animals for study. Betsy was one of two dogs (both of which were Border Collies) whose intelligence was beyond that of Rico, also a Border Collie, who knows over 200 words. Betsy was featured on the cover of the March 2008 edition of National Geographic.

Betsy has a vocabulary of more than 340 words, which rivals that of the great apes, in terms of intelligence and lateral thinking. After hearing a word only twice, Betsy is able to decipher that the sound is a command or instruction and regards it as such. Betsy is believed to learn in the same way that human toddlers do, if not faster. Betsy is capable of interpreting the correlation between a two-dimensional photograph and the object it depicts, and is able to retrieve the item simply by seeing the image, despite never having seen the depicted object or the photograph before. During testing, Betsy retrieved the correct item 38 out of 40 times. Betsy knows 15 people by only their name. It is believed that Betsy's unusual intelligence can be attributed to dogs' prolonged association with humans, evolution and her breed—the Border Collie was found to be the most intelligent breed of dog by psychology professor Stanley Coren in his book The Intelligence of Dogs. Juliane Kaminski, a cognitive psychologist who tested Betsy, hypothesised that her abilities are the result of the use of the Border Collie breed as working dogs, their high motivation levels and that they historically had to pay close attention to their owners' commands when engaged in herding."

Today's cool recipe is Snickerpoodles!

"Ingredients:

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup shortening

1 cup honey

2 eggs

3 ¾ cups white flour

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ cup cornmeal

2 teaspoons cinnamon

Directions:

Mix vegetable oil, shortening , honey with eggs. Beat well. Add flour, soda and cream of tartar. Knead dough until mixed well. Shape dough by rounded teaspoons into balls. Mix the cornmeal and cinnamon together in a bowl and roll balls in mixture. Place 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet . Press the balls down with a fork. Bake for 8-10 minutes at 400F. Cool on a rack. Store in airtight container."

"Ashley Whippet (ca. 1971 – 1985), a Whippet owned by Alex Stein of Ohio, was the first great disc dog and the winner of three Canine Frisbee Disc World Championships.

Ashley first gained notoriety on August 4, 1974 when Stein, then a 19-year-old college student, smuggled him into Dodger Stadium during a nationally televised baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds. Stein jumped the fence and went onto the baseball field with Ashley, where he threw discs (Frisbees) for the dog to catch. The crowd was in awe at Ashley's disc-catching ability, as he ran up to 35 miles per hour and leaped 9 feet in the air to snag the Frisbees. The stunt was so novel that the game was stopped and Joe Garagiola continued to announce the flying disc action on the field. Finally, after eight minutes, Stein was escorted off the field and arrested. The nationally televised exhibition of Ashley's skill did much to fuel interest in the disc dog sport.

The next year, Stein helped to organize the first Frisbee Dog World Championship for flying-disc catching dogs and their handlers, which continued as an annual event. Stein and Ashley won the first three championships in 1975, 1976 and 1977. In those early years the Dog World Championship took place alongside the "human" Frisbee championships at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Eventually, it turned into a contest series and, in the early 1980s, was named the Ashley Whippet Invitational (AWI) in honor of Ashley.

Ashley's skills as a disc dog were featured in the 1977 documentary entitled Floating Free, which was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Live Action Short Film. The eleven minute short was shot at the 1977 World Frisbee Championships and showcases the various events at the competition.

In 1977 Ashley performed at Super Bowl XI as the pre-game entertainment. She also performed at the White House for a young Amy Carter.

Ashley's Ice Cream is a popular ice cream shop located on the Connecticut shoreline named after Ashley Whippet. It currently has 5 locations open, all of which are located in New Haven County. Their largest ice cream dish is served on a frisbee. The shop has been voted Connecticut's best ice cream 14 years in a row. Ashley Whippet's favorite ice cream flavor from Ashley's Ice Cream was sweet cream."

Today's awesome recipe is Ravioli Woofer Stuffing!

"Ingredients:

3 tablespoons whole wheat flour

3/4 cup cottage cheese, 2% fat

2 eggs

1/2 cup cooked Atlantic salmon -- finely diced

2 tablespoons parsley sprig -- finely chopped

Prepare the Poodle Pasta recipe. form into the desired ravioli shape and size. Cover with damp cloth and set aside.

Directions:

In a bowl, mix cottage cheese, whole wheat flour and eggs. Add salmon and parsley mix a few more moments.

Depending on ravioli size, place 1 to 4 teaspoons in center of each, moisten edges and fold.

Ravioli can be boiled or baked. If boiling, place in rapid boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes or till done. If baking pre-heat oven to 375, place ravioli on a baking sheet, put in oven for 20 to 25 minutes.

Note: use leftover meat such as beef, chicken, lamb etc. Also shredded veggies like carrots, sweet potato, etc. or chopped veggies such as green beans, broccoli, kale etc. raw oat meal and cooked wild rice or cooked barley, can be used in place of meat."

Today's extreme K9s are definitely champions!

"Growing up in New Mexico, My family lived in the country and raised Dachshunds. One morning I looked out the front window to see a good sized rattlesnake in the yard surrounded by all six of our Dachshunds. One dog would distract the snake and another dog would run up and bite it and run away before the snake could turn to strike. I couldn't believe what I was watching: it seemed that the dogs had been trained to work as a group (though they hadn't). The whole thing ended when one dog ran in and grabbed the snake, whipped her head to the side and sent the snake flying across the yard. Needless to say, that snake somehow managed a hasty retreat, though I'm sure it was hurt and very dizzy. To this day I have never seen a group of dogs work so well together with no training.

Today's awesome recipe is Icy Paws!

"Ingredients:

2 cartons plain or vanilla yogurt (32 oz each)

1 small can tuna in water (8oz.)

2 tsp. garlic power

24 3 oz. plastic cups (not paper)

Instructions:

Open yogurt, if they are full to the top use a spoon & scoop out one cup (these will be frozen as plain yogurt). Put half of the can of tuna in each yogurt container add the garlic power (1 tsp. in each) & stir thoroughly.

Use a spoon & scoop the mixture into the cups. Place on a tray & freeze overnight.

• Makes about 24 treats."
