Today's extreme K9 is Mikey!

" Sacramento, CA Thursday, December 16, 2004. After spending nearly 2 years in an animal shelter, “Mikey” has been reunited with his owner and is finally home.

Mikey had been separated from Matthew Strong after he and his wife divorced. His ex-wife kept Mikey until she moved and her landlord would not allow dogs, Strong explained.

"She told me she was taking him to a shelter," he said.

By this time, Strong had moved to Sacramento, where he also was living in a complex that did not allow pets. Strong even asked friends to take Mikey in, but had no luck. He thought often about Mikey, remembering that he didn't want a dog at first, but how after his wife brought the puppy home, he became more and more attached to the dog. Soon, he and Mikey were best buddies.

“I thought I’d never see Mikey again”

18 Months later when he was having trouble sleeping, Strong began surfing the Internet, and found himself at Google.

“Out of curiosity I typed in “Tahoe Mikey”.” Strong explained. “And there he was, the very first result; staring at me was Mikey!”

Strong worried that Mikey was possibly no longer at the shelter. He sent an email to the organization that had posted Mikey’s photo. Connie Nowlin of the Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation contacted Strong and Mikey’s identity was confirmed. Mikey had been at the shelter for 18 months.

"Mikey was so lucky. WARF took really good care of him," he said. "They had a kiddy pool with rocks for him to play with, volunteers that would take him on long walks, and people would bring him home to play."

A few days later Strong made the two hour journey to the Placer County Animal Shelter in Tahoe City where Mikey was housed. Mikey recognized him right away and was ready to go home. Before leaving the shelter, Mikey demonstrated to the WARF volunteers some hidden tricks he learned from Strong years before.

Samantha Loudon, one of the co-directors of Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation, said the reunion must have been meant to be.

"He had been adopted two weeks ago, but was brought back because one of the roommates wasn't comfortable with him," she said.

Strong and many of his friends at work have pitched in donations to give to WARF for taking such good care of Mikey.

“Mikey has always been my best buddy and now he’s home back where he belongs. We have a lot of catching up to do and I’m looking forward to it. I’m so thankful for WARF and all the volunteers who helped bring Mikey home, they made us a very merry Christmas.”"

Today's awesome recipe is Meatball Mania!

"Ingredients:

1/2 lb. ground beef

2 tbsp. grated cheese

1 carrot, finely grated

1/2 tsp. garlic powder

1/2 cup bread crumbs (whole wheat is healthiest)

1 egg, beaten

1 tsp. tomato paste

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients together; mix thoroughly. Roll into meatballs - whatever size is appropriate for your dog. Place on a cookie sheet sprayed with non-fat cooking spray. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until they are brown and firm. Cool and store in the fridge or freezer."

Today's extreme K9 is Bobby!

"Bobby a terrier-mix was the best friend of Mr. John Gray, or “Auld Jock” as he was locally known. Auld Jock was a Shepherd who died in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1958. At Edinburgh’s Greyfriar’s Churchyard Cemetery, only the man who found him and the gravedigger were there at the funeral, along with Bobby. Despite the “No Dogs” sign at the graveyard entrance, Bobby kept a fourteen-year vigil over his master’s grave.

Bobby was soon a common sight around the neighborhood, he was fed everyday at 1:00pm by John Traill’s family at the Greyfriars Dining Room. In 1967, after being picked up as a stray, Bobby was rescued by Sir William Chambers, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, who paid for Bobby’s Dog License and collar.

When Bobby died, the Scotsman paper printed an obituary, January 17th, 1872, for the only canine Freeman of the City. Bobby was buried next to his master at Greyfriars. A red granite water fountain, with a statue of Bobby in bronze resting on top, in memorial of a loyal friendship by Baroness Burdett Coutts is placed in Candlemakers; Row, near his graveyard. In the seventies, Walt Disney dedicated one of their weekly hour shows to this wonderful little dog, entitled “Greyfriars’ Bobby.”"

Today's awesome recipe is Mutt's Favorite Rice n' Hamburger!

"Ingredients:

2 cups rice

1/2 pound hamburger

1 tsp vegetable oil

1 clove garlic

1/2 cup carrots or broccoli or spinach

4 cups water

Directions:

Put all ingredients into a large pot, boil until done, then cool off and serve. I feed my dogs this kind of meal or a variation every day, instead of store-bought food. They've got shiny coats, are full of energy and love eating dinner again!"

"December 12th, 1953, Tip and her master, Joseph Tagg, an eighty-one year-old retired gamekeeper from Bamford, England, had been out on one of their long walks on the Howden (high Derbyshire) moors when the old man passed away.

For fifteen weeks search parties failed, and were set back due to severe frost and snow storms. The man and dog were presumed dead, when, a couple of men rounding up stray sheep in early spring came across the body of Tip’s master, with a starving and sickly Tip on guard beside it. She had waited for over three months, through the worst of winter, for help to come for the one she loved.

Tip spent her last year with a niece of Joseph Tagg, were she was awarded the highest order of canine chivalry. A year after her death, a memorial shrine was unveiled along the banks of Derwent Dam, in Derbyshire."

Today's awesome dog recipe is Sheltie Scones!

"Ingredients:

2 ½ cups of self-raising flour

¼ tspn salt

1 cup chopped liver (if you don't have chopped liver, use small dog biscuits)

½ water (you can add chicken stock for extra taste)

½ milk

30g butter (or margarine)

(Chopped Liver: Just boil the liver until it is grey and a rubbery consistency. Or if you have a microwave, cook it on high for about 8 mins. Chop it up into small pieces and when cool put the pieces into a number of airtight bags and store in the fridge. Use liver pieces as treats when training)

Directions:

Sift flour and salt into a bowl, rub in butter. Add chopped liver. Use a knife to stir in milk and enough water to mix to a sticky dough. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface, knead quickly and lightly until dough is smooth. Press dough out evenly to about 2 cm and cut into rounds. Place on prepared tray and bake in very hot over for 15 minutes. Makes about 16-18."

"Villa, a black Newfoundland, was from Villas, New Jersey. Villa was a half grown puppy when during a severe blizzard, she started to bark from her dogrun. After several minutes she leapt over the five foot fence and ran across to the neighbors yard. The snow was so thick, that visibility was zero, and the winds were howling at 60 miles per hour. The neighbors 11 year old girl, Andrea Anderson, was out looking at the storm when the wind blew her across the yard. Unable to see, she had become stuck in a drift, and was unable to free herself. Villa heard her cries for help, escaped her cage, and Andrea. Villa had to circle the child several times before she could manage to free herself from the drift. Villa, then led Andrea safely to her home."

Today's awesome dog recipe is Crunchy Wheat Treats!

"Ingredients:

2 1/2C all purpose flour

2C whole wheat flour

1C rolled oats

1/2C wheat germ (I use honey nut wheat germ)

1/2C corn meal

14 1/2oz can beef or chicken broth (or make your own)

1/2C non-fat dry milk

1 tsp salt

1 pkg dry yeast

1/4C warm water

1 Tblsp milk

1 beaten egg

Directions:

Dissolve yeast in 1/4C warm water and let proof. Warm the broth to about 110°. In large bowl, mix 2 flours, oats, wheat germ, corn meal, dry milk and salt. Stir in broth and yeast mixture. Knead by hand for at least 3 minutes. Don't skimp on the kneading time! Roll into a 1/2" thick sheet and cut with cookie cutter, or roll into a log shape and slice to desired size. Mix the egg and milk and brush on before baking. Bake at 300° for about 40 minutes ( a little longer if they're big). Turn off oven and leave in overnight. (the longer you leave them in the warm oven, the crunchier they get.) Haven't met a dog in the park yet who doesn't love these all natural healthy treats!"
