Extreme K9s 101!

Sorry for not posting for awhile!

Today's extreme K9 is Zena!

"Elizabeth and Frank Brazier's trip to Indiana in 1923 turned into every dog-lover's nightmare. Their beloved collie, Bobbie, disappeared. They returned to Oregon heartbroken, resigned to never again see their beloved pet.

Seven months later, Bobbie showed up at the Braziers' front door. "The Wonder Dog" -- as Bobbie would soon be known -- had braved blizzards, traversed mountains and miraculously navigated nearly 3,000 miles.

Bobbie is one of many incredible animals that found their way back to the people they loved despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Joker, a cocker spaniel, was not content to sit at home while his owner, Army Capt. Stanley C. Raye, headed off for military service during World War II. Joker sneaked out of the house, stowed away on a ship, and, using only his nose, located Raye on a secret base in the South Pacific.

"If a miracle is something that happens without physical explanation and seems to defy everything we know about a particular aspect of our world, then these are miracles," said Brad Steiger, who co-authored "Four-Legged Miracles: Heartwarming Tales of Lost Dogs' Journeys Home," with his wife, Sherry Hansen Steiger.

The Steigers have been writing books together about the phenomenal and the paranormal for 26 years. They told The Huffington Post that "Four-Legged Miracles," which hits the shelves Tuesday, includes some of the "most dramatic" of the animal tales they've encountered."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Ole!

"Search and rescue team member Bill Whittle said he was "positive" that the Welsh corgi — named Ole — had been buried in Saturday's avalanche. "The avalanche guys were up there on Monday investigating and they were looking for the dog too and never seen any signs," he said.
But on Wednesday, Ole showed up exhausted and hungry back at the motel, four miles from where the slide occurred, the Billings Gazette reported. "When I first saw the dog, it was sitting in front of their room staring at the door," Cooke City Alpine Motel owner Robert Weinstein said in an email to The Associated Press on Thursday. Dave Gaillard of Bozeman was skiing with his wife when the avalanche struck near Cooke City, an old mining town just outside Yellowstone National Park. "His last words to me were, 'Retreat to the trees.' I think he saw what was coming from above, that I did not see," Kerry Corcoran Gaillard told the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. Gaillard's daughter, 11-year-old Marguerite, was putting photos of Ole on poster board as a memorial Wednesday afternoon.
"She found out when she was halfway done with that that Ole was still alive," said Gaillard's step-daughter, Silver Brelsford. Whittle drove the dog back to the family in Bozeman. "He was tired," Brelsford told the AP. "He's doing really well now." Sidney resident Jody Ray Verhasselt, 46, also died Saturday in another avalanche while snowmobiling north of Cooke City. The two New Year's Eve avalanche deaths have taken a toll on the small mountain community. "We needed this," Whittle said of Ole's survival. "It kind of cheered everyone up." Searchers recovered Gaillard's body earlier this week. Family members were preparing for his funeral on Friday."

Bark out the Facts!

Today's cool fact is...

"French poodles did not originate in France but in Germany (“poodle” comes from the German pudel or pudelhund, meaning “splashing dog”). Some scholars speculate the poodle’s puffs of hair evolved when hunters shaved the poodle for more efficient swimming, while leaving the pom-poms around the major joints to keep them warm."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Julie!

"Julie, a 3-year-old girl living in Pierzwin, Poland, befriended a stray black dog who would often stop by her house for a little attention. And that is exactly where the young girl was last seen, playing with the pup in her backyard, before she went missing earlier this month. Townspeople and rescue officials searched for the girl, but it wasn't until they heard the barks of that faithful dog the next day that they were able to locate Julie, freezing, in a nearby forest. The dog not only ensured that Julie was found, but also helped her survive the night, one firefighter said."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Otis!

"Tim Tebow: For my birthday weekend the summer before my junior year in high school, I went with my brother Robby and my friend Kevin to Disney World. When we returned to our farm outside Jacksonville, something seemed different. My mom met us as we pulled up in front of the house.
“I haven’t seen Otis all weekend,” she said. She seemed pretty unsettled.

Otis (the “first greeter”) was always excited to see everyone on their arrival. Now Mom was telling us he’d been gone all weekend? It wasn’t completely out of the ordinary for him to take off for several hours but never several days, so we all headed out to find him.

I took off on foot, then decided that the car would be faster. I drove around the property, calling as loud as I could. I kept hoping Otis would come bounding and barking from behind a corner of somewhere.

I made another pass down the driveway, keeping my eyes on the underbrush. There it was—that golden head popping up in the brush. I slammed on the brakes, jumped out of the car, and ran toward him.

Otis put his head back down. In the past, he would have come running to me. I reached him, afraid that he’d been bitten by a snake. He looked fine, and I slowly and gently lifted his head. I still didn’t see anything wrong, until he opened his mouth.
It was a bloody mess. His bottom jaw appeared to have been split down its full length, the two pieces hanging loosely. He was missing teeth, I would later learn, but I couldn’t tell at the time with all the damage and blood. I looked at his legs and realized that instead of being tucked under him as they should be, they were awkwardly splayed. Otis had been hurt bad, but I couldn’t figure out by what.

I gently but quickly scooped him up, put him on the seat of the car, and raced back to the house to tell the others so we could head to the vet. All the way there, I was getting angrier. It was becoming clear that Otis hadn’t been attacked by a “what” but by a “who.” It looked to me like he’d been struck repeatedly.

The vet agreed with my guess and suggested that this could have been the work of a baseball bat. “Tim, his injuries are too severe,” he said. Otis’s back, legs, and hips were severely damaged, and his jaw was radically fractured. Surgery would have been extensive and expensive, and there was no guarantee he’d survive. Plus, the lengthy rehabilitation might prove to be more than he could take.

So we brought Otis home to die and laid him carefully on his bed.

Only we forgot to tell Otis that was the plan. We forgot to tell him these were his last days.

So every day, I carefully lifted Otis and carried him to our swimming pool. I gently submerged him on my lap up to his shoulders, and we rested together in the pool for a while.

After I’d been doing that for a couple of weeks, I began gently moving his back legs and watching his reaction. We took it slowly and increased his range of motion over time to help his muscles regain some tone and strength. He didn’t seem to want to move them on his own, but he let me move them for him. Over time, I started moving my hand out from under his back legs, which would force him to paddle a bit to feel like he was staying afloat. I never took my hand off his chest and never made him paddle much. Just long enough so he could take a few strokes and regain some confidence and strength.

It was hard to look at Otis without feeling how painful the attack must have been and how much he still must have hurt.

Thankfully, he continued to get better, and over the next few months, with the regular pool workouts and lots of milk shakes—he loved vanilla—he regained the ability to walk, albeit with a noticeable limp. He never ran again, but after an initial period where he seemed ashamed or worried that he’d done something wrong—which made me upset at the physical injuries he’d suffered—he settled back into being himself. He was a bit frail, but he was our Otis, no less, the one we always knew and loved.

Otis lived to be 13 and died when Tebow was away playing college football. Today, the Jets quarterback owns a Rhodesian ridgeback named Bronx."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Ricochet!

"There are dogs who play ball, dogs who chase cats and dogs who catch Frisbees. But near San Diego there is Ricochet, a 3-year-old golden retriever who catches waves and captures hearts. Ricochet helps teach disabled people how to surf by acting as a canine co-pilot. "She stabilizes the board," said Sabine Becker, who was born with no arms. "Somehow, she does it so we're not off balance. She is just standing there and just surfs with us." Surfing isn't even Ricochet's first career. From birth, she was trained to be a service dog, a companion to someone who needed help with everyday tasks. But she is a little mischievous and likes to chase birds, poor traits for a companion who needs to provide constant attention. Ricochet started boogie boarding at 8 weeks old and is now a pro on the surfboard. Fridono swears she adjusts her balance and stance depending on the disability of the person she is surfing with.
Ricochet is just as valuable on land: She has raised more than $100,000 for different charities on her Facebook page and her videos have gone viral, garnering more than 3 million views. She is also a finalist for the annual "Hero Dog Award" from the American Humane Association, where she is up against a guide dog and even a military dog, all amazing animals. And while they all might rate a 10, only Ricochet can hang ten."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Belle!

"Kevin Weaver has diabetes. He also has a specially-trained beagle named Belle who can sense when his blood sugar levels are off. She licks his nose, and then paws at him to signal that he should take a reading. In the summer of 2006, Belle put another skill to work. Weaver suffered a seizure and collapsed. Belle grabbed the man's cell phone and bit down on the number 9, just like she had been trained. The number was programmed to dial 911, and emergency workers soon arrived. Belle was later given the VITA Wireless Samaritan Award for those who use cell phones to save lives. Belle was the first dog to ever win the award."

1/4 cup beef broth
3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO)

Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 350° and line a baking sheet with foil.
2. In a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat until crisp, about 10 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the bacon to paper towels to drain, reserving the grease. Let the bacon cool slightly, then crumble.
3. In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal and crumbled bacon. In a large measuring cup, stir together 1 1/3 cups warm water and the broth and pour into the dry ingredients. Add the EVOO and stir together to form a loose dough. Knead on a work surface until smooth.
4. Divide the dough into balls of the appropriate size for your dog (about 1 inch for large dogs and 1/2 inch for small dogs) and set on the prepared baking sheet. Drizzle with the reserved bacon grease. Bake until firm to the touch, 35 to 45 minutes. Let cool completely."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Dorado!

"Omar Eduardo Rivera is a blind computer technician who uses a guide dog. On September 11, 2001, Rivera was working on the 71st floor of the World Trade Center when a plane hit the building above him. His dog Dorado was under Rivera's desk, as usual. As the building evacuation began, Rivera smelled the smoke and heard the chaos in the stairwell. He took the Labrador retriever's leash off, so the dog could escape. Dorado ignored Rivera's order to go ahead, and escorted his master down 70 flights of stairs. They were separated by the rush of the crowd for a few minutes, but Dorado found his way back to Rivera and continued down the stairs. They reached the ground about an hour after they began the descent, only a few minutes before the building collapsed."

Bone Appetit!

Sorry for the late posting!

Today's cool recipe is Pupkin Biscuits!

"Ingredients:
2 eggs
1/2 cup canned pure pumpkin puree
2 tablespoons dry milk powder
2 1/2 cups white or whole wheat flour

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees . In a bowl, stir together the eggs, pumpkin puree, milk powder and flour; add 2 tsp. water, or enough so that the dough just comes together.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with 1-inch cookie cutters. Gather the scraps, combine, roll and form more biscuits; repeat until all the dough is used.
Place the biscuits 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes, then turn over and bake until hardened, another 20 minutes. Let cool on the pan for 5 minutes."
