Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9s are adored by Ellen DeGeneres!

"Ellen DeGeneres knows how to give back – and not just to human-related causes. DeGeneres has continually proven to be a voice for animals on her self-titled daytime television show, through her charity work and with the partnerships which she has formed and aligned herself. DeGeneres draws attention through posts on her website to several worthy animal-related charities and organizations. She has supported, donated, visited and/or volunteered with many of the organizations she mentions, including: Animal Tracks, Inc., The Gentle Barn, Halo (an organization she co-owns), and Farm Sanctuary.
More info about some of these charities:
The Gentle Barn "We provide a place for people and animals to be reminded that they matter," said founder Ellie Laks. Roughly 120 animals live at the Gentle Barn and once they've been rehabilitated, they are able to help children who've also suffered from abuse, who have special-needs or those on probation or in foster care. Watch Portia de Rossi's visit to the Gentle Barn.
Farm Sanctuary's mission is rescue, education and advocacy when it comes to farm animals which are treated according to its website as "unfeeling commodities" with "their basic needs completely ignored."
Halo Pet Foundation focuses on encouraging and promoting the relationship between pets and owners. Co-owned by Ellen herself, the foundation provides pet advice, recipes for dog food and animal adoption events."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Brown Bear!

"Brown Bear's days were numbered. He was in a high-kill shelter until Lucky Dog Animal Rescue of Washington, D.C., relocated and placed the large mixed-breed dog with a big family. His extended family totals 168 residents at the Brooke Grove Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Sandy Grove, Md. He's been there for two months, joining another dog, two cats and several birds.

"Bear is a doll," says Sue Goldstone, Brooke Grove's quality assurance coordinator. "He intuitively knew how to behave around our residents, some of whom are fragile."

Bear is a big help to people with dementia, she says: "They can often get agitated, but putting them with Bear calms them down."

Goldstone says she's grateful Lucky Dog granted his adoption to them. "We feel very fortunate to have him. The residents have company every minute of every day. Life is enhanced by the ability to walk through a building and to be able to pet a dog's muzzle or snuggle a cat."

And what better place for a dog, she adds, considering the center is on 220 acres. "Dogs that live and work here have the full run of the place. They learn how to use the elevators and get around like anyone else."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9s belong to Denise Richards!

"She's worn many hats over the years – model, actress and devoted mother – but one of her lesser-known roles is animal lover and pet-adoption advocate. For many years, Denise Richards has partnered with Best Friends Animal Society and its 'Pup My Ride' program to promote pet adoption. "When I was little, I swear I brought home every stray dog, hoping my parents would let me keep it," Richards wrote in her blog. Richards wrote that she'd made many trips to a shelter to save between 30 to 50 dog, all scheduled to be euthanized. The dogs then go to Best Friends where they get the chance to be adopted. She has helped more than 2000 dogs find homes. While on her journey with Best Friends, Richards adopted several dogs herself including one with no eyes, one with cancer and one that came from a hoarding situation."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9s belong to a very famous celebrity!

"Katherine Heigl, 33, calls her dogs -- all seven of them -- "a blessing." In addition to her successful film career, Heigl's also part of a campaign called "I Hate Balls" -- which promotes spaying and neutering pets. She also founded the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation (named after her late brother). "The motto for our foundation is that we want to help and protect the voiceless and the innocent -- that was my brother's bent. He had an unusually grand sense of compassion," Heigl said. Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Nubs!

"This is a true story about Marine Major Brian Dennis and an Iraqi stray dog. The events that occurred in 2007 are an awe-inspiring demonstration of a strong bond formed between man and dog. The extraordinary strength and determination demonstrated by the dog are the most remarkable aspects of this narrative.
A children's book, "Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle" chronicles the friendship that ultimately saved the life of this dog and warmed the hearts of all involved in his rescue. Maj. Dennis along with Kirby Larson and Mary Nethery are the authors of the book, published in November 2009, that tells the story through photographs and narrative.
Maj. Dennis and his unit were part of a border transition team deployed to a fort near the Jordanian/Syrian/Iraqi border. While there, they regularly traveled between the fort and their forward operating base. On one of these visits, they came upon a pack of feral stray dogs that hung around the fort area. As Dennis stepped out of his Humvee, a German Shepherd mix dog approached him cautiously.
There was an instant rapport between the pack's alpha dog and the "alpha" Marine and soon they were closely bonded. This was surprising as in those circumstances there was little reason for a wild dog to trust a human. The Iraqi soldiers, purportedly to make him into a fighting war dog, had cut off the dog's ears. Iraqi culture is not fond of dogs. Muslims consider dogs unclean and untouchable and thus do not treat strays kindly.
Whenever he was at the fort, Major Dennis took the dog into his care. He named him "Nubs" because of his ears. Nubs stood guard duty with Dennis, slept with him, and was treated kindly by the whole team. These visits lasted only a few days and then the unit went elsewhere for two to three weeks. Every time they left, Nubs would chase after their vehicle but Dennis had to leave him behind because of a Marine rule that pets are not allowed in combat zones. During these away times, they always worried about Nubs' welfare.
On one visit to the fort, Nubs did not greet them. He was later found, gaunt and weak from a stab wound to his side that punctured his lung. This was probably inflicted by the locals who resented the presence of the Marines. With a few days care Nubs recovered from his wounds and on their next visit two weeks later he was in good shape but once again, they had to leave him behind.
Two days later, after they were at their destination 70 miles away, Nubs appeared at the base, weary and footsore. He had traveled across the frigid Iraqi desert enduring much hardship in order to be with his "person." It seemed like a miracle that the dog, probably following the scent, was able to survive the journey.
This time Maj. Dennis was determined not to ever leave Nubs behind again and the unit adopted him. Dennis said, "Nubs was a huge morale booster. Dogs just make people smile. They can brighten your day in a pretty gloomy, tension-filled place." Nubs was given a Marine collar, food, and love. Unfortunately, the unit was soon ordered to "get rid of the dog, or else." They were only given a few days to resolve the problem.
Dennis was able to raise $2,000, the amount needed to send Nubs to California to stay with his friends until he returned home permanently later that year. Happy conclusion: Dennis returned to San Diego in one piece himself, and Nubs was there to greet him. They are still happily living together today."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Baby!

"Baby the French bulldog thinks she's a mama - to six abandoned wild boar piglets. The curious event happened last week at the Lehnitz animal sanctuary, outside Berlin. Baby, 8, decided that the six piglets, found in the wild, would become her babies. Baby's a nurturer, says Norbert Damm, a sanctuary worker. She's mothered several other orphaned animals, including raccoons and cats."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Kate!

"Kate the Great Dane can't help but fawn over her buddy, Pippin the black-tailed deer. She lovingly licks her hooved pal's coat and constantly nuzzles her neck.
The Great Dane's owner, Isobel Springett, found the scared and hungry orphaned fawn near her home and brought her inside to feed her. "The moment the two animals laid eyes on each other, they were BFFs," Springett says.
Over the next few weeks, Pippin gained strength and bonded with her dog pal. The buddies would spend the day play-fighting and running after a toy ball.
Soon healthy, Pippin joined a wild deer herd. But she still pays regular visits to Kate. When they're not cuddling, they playfully chase one another--- or other animals. Springett once saw them scamper after a black bear. "He took one look at the pair and ran in the other direction," she says. This dog-deer team cannot be stopped!"

Bark out the Facts!

Today's cool fact is...

"After the fall of Rome, human survival often became more important than breeding and training dogs. Legends of werewolves emerged during this time as abandoned dogs traveling in packs commonly roamed streets and terrified villagers."

Today's cool recipe is Peanut Butter Puppy Poppers!

"2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 tbsp. baking powder
1 cup peanut butter (chunky or smooth)
1 cup milk

Preheat oven to 375'F. In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder. In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk, then add to dry ingredients and mix well. Place dough on a lightly floured surface and knead. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness and use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Bake for 20 minutes on a greased baking sheet until lightly brown. Cool on a rack, then store in an airtight container. --- This is the original recipe, but I have found the cookies burn easily."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Viola!

"Suddenly they both smile. A big yellow dog lying in the hallway is wagging its tail at Haley. Ever so gently, her dad guides Haley to the floor to sit beside the dog. And ever so gently, Haley reaches out for the dog's muzzle. "Dog," she says. The dog stretches out a paw and touches Haley's leg.

"We have two German shepherds at home (in Dallas, N.C.), so she's really happy to see this dog," says Haley's mother, Laura Buchanan. "This makes it easier for us."

Viola, a golden Labrador, belongs to the Children's Inn, a private, non-profit residence on the NIH campus where families whose chronically ill children are being treated at NIH can stay. Mars Inc. donated Vi to the inn in 2008 after she was retired as a Seeing Eye dog. The kids can spend time alone with Vi and attend special activities with her.

"Having a dog here helps the children relax, feel more at home, and makes their treatments more bearable," says Meredith Carlson Daly, media relations coordinator at the inn. "There have been many studies done showing how beneficial animal therapy can be. We see those benefits here every day."

Tracy Wilcox knows how hard it was for her 9-year-old daughter, Breana, before Vi arrived. Breana has been getting treatments at NIH since she was 2½. She missed nearly 70 days of school last year while dealing with high fevers and chronic pain from an autoimmune inflammatory disorder. Her black Lab, Midnight, comforts her at home, Wilcox says. "He's more in tune with knowing when she's getting sick than I am."

Traveling to NIH from Boston has been stressful, says Wilcox, because Breana has to leave her dog behind. Last June, she got very upset in the airport until her mother surprised her: "I told her the inn had gotten a dog," Wilcox says. "She stopped crying right away.

"After her treatments, she'll go back to the inn, get on the floor with Vi and tell Vi all about what happened with the doctors. And it's rough stuff. When she gets home, she sits on the floor and tells Midnight all about Vi.

"As a parent, Vi saved us," Wilcox says. "She took away all my daughter's angst. She's gone from hating herself and her disease to looking forward to going back to the inn and getting well."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Dozer!

"Dozer, a three-year-old “goldendoodle,” saw a bunch of people run by his home in Fulton, Maryland. He became so excited that he crossed his invisible fence and started running with them. Seven miles later, Dozer crossed the finish line of the Maryland Half Marathon, a fundraising event for the University of Maryland’s Greenebaum Cancer Center. The runners did not know Dozer was alone. He returned home the next day, looking so tired that his owners took him to the vet. Word got around, and they realized Dozer was the dog on the marathon’s TV coverage. Marathon organizers gave Dozer a special award. Now he has his own runner’s page and Facebook fan page -and he’s raised $21,000 for the cancer center!"

3 to 3 1/2 lbs of liver, beef or chicken
1 C whole wheat flour
4.25 oz jar fresh minced or crushed garlic

1/2 C corn meal
1 med shaker of grated parmesan cheese

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cover cookie sheet with foil, coat with cooking spray, sprinkle lightly with corn meal and set aside. Process liver and garlic in food processor or blender until it looks like milk chocolate. Pour into large mixing bowl and blend in the rest of the ingredients. Spread evenly onto cookie sheet (the mixture will be thick) and sprinkle lightly with corn meal. Bake until no pink is left. I usually bake them for about 30 min for one pan and then turn the oven off but leave the brownies inside until they are cool. Cut in pieces and be ready to be loved by your dog(s)."

Extreme K9s 101!

Today's extreme K9 is Katijina!

"Don't try to take a treat from this pelican! At least that's the lesson Katijina the Australian ridgeback dog learned when she stole a frozen chicken treat from Petri the pelican one afternoon. The result? Petri poked around the dog's mouth, prodded inside her ear, and then even tried to swallow Katijina's head--- all in search of the missing snack. "Little did Petri know that Katijina ate the teat in one bite," says Roland Adams, who owns the sanctuary where Katijina and Petri live with other dogs, birds, rabbits, and monkeys. Adam says the animals get along peacefully--- most of the time. "It helps that Katijina just had puppies," he says. "It made her much more patient with Petri."
