Tuesday Tricks!

Today's Tuesday Trick is "heel!"

"Your dog is your best friend. He comforts you when you are sad and is your playmate when you're happy. But you have responsibilities to your dog, including teaching him basic obedience. Using a leash and jerking your dog's neck is not necessary to train him to heel. Tasty treats and an abundance of praise will usually do the trick."

Step 1. Have your dog on your left side, facing the same direction as you.
Step 2. In your left hand hold food in front of your dog's nose.
Step 3. Give the command "Heel" and begin taking steps while keeping the treat in front of your left hip.
Step 4. Note that it may take several attempts to keep your dog focused on the food.
Step 5. Say the word "Good" at the exact time your dog walks as you walk.
Step 6. Give your dog the food along with an abundance of praise for even the slightest show of understanding.
Step 7. Train in short, 5-minute intervals throughout the day.
Step 8. Be very patient and positive, and have fun.

Tuesday Tricks!

Today's Tuesday Trick is "roll over."

Use a food lure to teach your dog to lie down. As he sits, hold the snack in front of his nose and quickly move it down to his paws, saying "Down!" as you do so. Repeat until he lies down on command.

Next, teach your pooch to roll on to his back. While he's lying down, hold a snack in front of his nose with your right hand and move it in an 8-inch clockwise rotation. This will cause the dog's head and upper body to twist around. At the same time, gently push on his upper belly with your left hand. "Most of the time, the dog will immediately roll over and throw his legs up so you can scratch his belly," notes Wayne Hunthausen, DVM, the owner of Animal Behavior Consultations in Westwood, Kansas. As the dog rolls over, say "Roll over!" Repeat until it has it down.

Doggystats!

Today's doggystar is featured in the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! This movie has so many wonderful parts but I'm going to focus on one that has our doggystar in it. This doggystar is named Edison! In this part the dad and the two kids are at a candy factory trying to sell their newest invention... TOOT SWEETS! This invention is a long roll of candy that is sort of like a recorder. You can play music on it! While making their attempt Edison hears the music and barges into the factory wishing to hear more. A long with him come basically all the other dogs in the town. They discover that it makes a perfect dog whistle! This hilarious, classical movie is sure to make this dog pop out!

Tuesday Tricks!

Today's Tuesday Trick is "lie down". This is another one of the basic tricks and shouldn't cause any trouble.

#1. Get your dog to "sit" and then reward him or her.
#2. Slowly take a treat in your hand and from the sitting position guide your dog down to the floor with the treat still in your hand.
#3. If the dog likes the treat, he or she will slowly start to lie down on the floor,"
#4. This is where you say "lie down."
#5. Then give your dog the treat!

Book Buddies!

Walter the Farting Dog is today's Book Buddies featured book. This hilarious but stinky book is all about a dog with a couple of gassy problems! Walter is a dog that farts for no simple reason. The owners take him to the vet and the vet says to feed him these special treats that will make him stop farting. The next morning Walter is incredibly fat! He had gotten into the dog treats and ate all of them! Did the farting stop? NO! The owners are very cross about this and give no gratitude to poor Walter. Then, while Walter is sleeping on the couch one night two robbers break into the house! Since everyone else is asleep and don't hear a thing, Walter starts to bark. The robbers, then, tie a rope around his yapper. Helplessly, Walter lies on the couch holding in a fart so that the owners won't be angry. But just as the robbers are packing up all the stuff on the bottom floor, Walter lets it out! A big fart cloud circles around the robbers and it's so intense, they drop everything and run out the door! This amazing story is sure to make you shriek with laughter but I hope it doesn't make you a little gassy!

Doggystars!

The movie today that features our doggystar is Underdog! This touching movie is a story about a beagle with special powers. It all starts when this beagle is on the streets. He doesn't have an owner and he's all alone. Then, an evil scientist's helper snatches the beagle up and snaps him into a cage. After that, he take him to the evil scientist's lab. There, the evil scientist analyzes the beagles DNA and then starts to try his new invention on the beagle. Just in time the beagle escapes but knocks down all of the evil scientist's potions (Note: Might I tell you that the beagle's name is Underdog). All the potions that splattered and broke on him gave him special powers to be 100 times stronger than a human and faster than a cheetah. It also gave him the ability to talk. As soon as Underdog escapes, he's on the streets again when a nice cop comes along and takes him home with him. This cop has a son and the son and Underdog soon become great friends. As soon as the son, though, finds out Underdog has special powers, he thinks of a brilliant plan. Underdog could be a hero! Underdog starts doing a ton of heroic deeds until one day the evil scientist comes back! As soon as Polly (Underdog's dog girlfriend) and her owner find out that they've returned, they go to the top of the building that the evil scientist is planning to strike at (to blow up). While they're up there the evil scientist's partner ties a bomb around Polly's owner's hands and straps it to a pole on the top of the building. Quick as a flash, Underdog unties Polly and her owner and digs as fast as he can under the ground, the bomb. There, he buries it and at lightning speed comes back up while the bomb is exploding. Will Underdog make it? Or, will he perish? Find out by watch this F.F.F.F.F!

Today's Tuesday Trick is "sit". For this command try holding a treat above your dog's head about 1 foot into the air so he or she can't reach it. Your dog will start to beg and soon it will get tired of begging and sit down still looking up at the treat. This is when you say "sit". Then, give your dog the treat. This is probably one of the easiest dog tricks so you shouldn't have trouble with it!
